大多数细胞通过在它们的表面上呈递它们内部的选定组分(被称作抗原)来给适应性免疫系统中的T细胞提供关于它们的状况的信息。如果这些组分含有病毒组分或发生改变的细胞组分,那么受影响的细胞就会被清除。在这个过程中,抗原的选择是至关重要的。呈递错误的抗原会导致健康细胞遭受免疫系统攻击,从而导致自身免疫疾病或慢性疾病,或者患病的细胞不会被识别,从而能够让癌细胞或病毒感染的细胞逃避免疫监控。

来自法兰克福大学的Christoph Thomas博士和Robert Tampé教授如今在分子水平上解析出细胞如何将选择抗原并将它们呈递到它的表面上。他们的结构生物学研究首次证实抗原经历的这种质量控制确保产生精确而又有效的免疫反应。

Robert Tampé教授解释道,“我们的研究解决了一个存在30年的细胞免疫问题,特别是与肿瘤或病原体相关的抗原如何通过编辑和质量控制的过程加以选择,以便产生特定的免疫反应。”
