冯先生2002年开始研究癌症,预测利用激光技术的癌症治疗结果。

“在这个项目中,我们正在使用激光的热量来杀死癌细胞,”他说。“我们必须使用计算机模拟来显示我们要使用的热量以及持续时间,所以我们没有损坏任何非癌组织。”

在这个项目中,冯先生了解到进行治疗时,特别是经常需要手术的癌症治疗,电脑模拟可以有多大益处。

他说:“你可以给医生和病人的最大好处之一是了解肿瘤的发展速度。”他说。 “这有助于你做出决定,不仅仅是决定何时治疗某人,也决定该如何治疗他们。”

冯与德州大学奥斯丁分校和MD安德森癌症中心的同事合作,创建了研究中描述的算法。该算法考虑到患者的组织和细胞中的主要生物学事件以及几种不同类型细胞的生长模式,其中还有许多其他因素。因此,该算法适用于所有类型的癌症。

“预测总是很好,”他说。“但治疗也总是受益于患者特异性治疗和精密医学治疗。”

冯先生计划将该算法应用于计算机程序,该计算机程序可以帮助医疗专业人员根据病人肿瘤的缓慢或快速增长来判断哪些治疗方案适合于患者的肿瘤处理。

他说:“一个肿瘤细胞只不过是一个正常细胞失控时发生的错误。”“这就是为什么癌症很难治疗:因为它就是你自己。”
