当研究人员进行小组分析时，他们发现与无/轻度牙周炎相比，患有严重牙周病的参与者患肺癌的风险增加了一倍以上。基线时无牙颌患者的结肠癌风险增加了80％，这与之前的研究结果相一致，在不吸烟的人群中，严重牙周炎患者的风险高出2倍。
