Science:可食用的“细菌药丸”?未来或可监测肠道健康

近几年,医药圈有很多“奇思妙想”,可食用传感器算其中一个,科学家们希望借此解析身体内部的反应和变化。近期,来自于麻省理工学院的研究团队研发了一种“细菌药丸”,它能够深入猪的消化道进行监测,并会将数据通过无线信号传递至手机上。

5月25日,《Science》期刊以“An ingestible bacterial-electronic system to monitor gastrointestinal health”为题的文章,揭示了这一自带WiFi功能的特殊药丸。

这一细菌药丸是工程师、生物学家合作的结晶。他们选中欧洲市场有售的益生菌作为原材料,并利用基因工程技术改造细菌,使其能够检测到血液中的血红素(heme,出血标志物)。具体而言,他们给细菌人为添加了几个基因:其中一个负责识别血红素,另一个能够让识别到目标化合物的细菌发光,从而被药丸内相邻的电子电路感应到并生成无线信号。

研究团队将4400万个细菌、电池、光亮检测器以及其他必要电子元件打包,装进10mm*30mm的药丸中。随后,他们将“细菌药丸”喂给三只猪进行验证。

研究结果显示,借助内部的细菌,这个微型生物电子装置可以检测猪肠道内的出血状况。这是一个很好的模型——未来通过修改传感器,将其检测目标改为特定的化合物,或可监测肠道健康。

目前,研究团队正在尝试缩小2/3药丸大小(例如减少电池大小)、同时捕获多个分子信号,从而进行更深入地研究。科学家们相信,采集身体内部化合物信息的“超级”传感器未来有望用于诊断溃疡、癌症或者其他疾病。
