光学系统技术可实现败血症病原体快速检测

患者的血液中毒,也被称为败血症,需要医护人员迅速给出诊断和治疗。有的医生会立刻开始使用广谱抗生素,但抗生素并不总是有理想的效果。例如,如果细菌对所用药物有抗药性,那么抗生素会失效。在实验室鉴定病原体,并对它们的潜在的抗生素耐药性进行调查,通常需要60到100个小时。而病人却等不起,大多数情况下白血病会在48小时左右导致患者死亡。例如在德国,每年有6万人因为血中毒而死亡。

如果这种病原体耐药性分析需要更少的时间,这将挽救许多病人的生命。医生一旦知道,病原体是否对某些抗生素有抗药性,他们就可以对病人进行有针对性的抗生素治疗,以可靠地杀灭病菌。德国科学家让快速检测成为了现实。他们的测试方法可以在短短的九个小时得到结果。

是什么让检测速度提高了十倍呢?研究人员们开发了一个小型化的系统,具有特殊的光学设计。检测的第一步是标记败血症的病原菌,使他们暴露在激光环境下。这使得研究人员能够评估血液中存在的病原体数量。在检测的下一阶段中,病原菌从血液中分离出来并进入单独的培养区。在这些不同的培养区中,每一区域含有特定抗生素的培养基。下一步光学系统会记录不同的培养区中细菌的生长过程,观察和精确地记录细菌如何繁殖。然后是最关键的一步:算法分析采集到的细菌的图片和培养区中细菌的生长曲线。这意味着研究人员可以看到在几个小时内,可以了解到不同的抗生素环境中细菌的生长情况,从而来发现是哪些抗生素抗性。

从本质上讲,这个检测技术的核心是,细菌在不同抗生素环境下的生长,可以被光学系统精确地观察和记录到。使用软件通过分析细菌的生长的程度,这套系统可以提供不同生长素培养基中,细菌数量和死菌的比例的数据。最终这个系统可以给出结论,即病原菌有哪些抗生素的耐药。这种自动化、快速的检测方法无疑会带来很大检测效率提高,为白血病患者战胜死神赢得了更多的时间。
