Kv3.3通道中的突变会导致一种罕见的退行性疾病,该病会影响年轻患者甚至新生儿的平衡和活动性,但也可能发生在中年人身上。在一种突变的研究中,药理学教授Leonard Kaczmarek和共同作者们获得了一些意料之外的发现。与其他通道相比,Kv3.3通道有能力构建细胞骨架,一种组织和塑造细胞的结构。

他们还发现,为了实现这一点,该通道会与控制神经细胞生存或死亡的Hax-1蛋白质相互作用。"这是惊人的"Kaczmarek说,"之前认为这些通道不应该与细胞死亡蛋白质交互。这有点像突然发现你最好的朋友竟然做了20年的杀手。"
