维生素D既是一种维生素也是一种激素,可有助于控制血液中钙和磷酸盐的水平,对骨骼和牙齿的形成至关重要。维生素D的来源包括鱼油和蛋类,但是仅通过饮食很难获得足够的维生素D。大部分人是通过晒太阳在紫外线的作用下产生维生素D。

既往研究表明,维生素D可阻断11-βHSD1酶的产生,而11-βHSD1是调节皮质醇的关键酶。皮质醇水平较高时,可限制血管的扩张,缩小血管,并刺激肾脏抑制水分的排出,使机体的血压升高。而维生素D或可降低皮质醇的循环,因而理论上讲,维生素D可提高机体的运动性能并降低心血管疾病发生的危险因素。

该研究中,共纳入了13名健康成年人,匹配年龄,分为试验组和对照组,试验组每天接受50 μg的维生素D,对照组则为50 μg的安慰剂,试验时间为两周。

结果发现,相比于对照组,试验组研究对象的血压更低,尿液中应激激素皮质醇的水平也较低。体能测试发现,试验组研究对象可在20分钟内跑完6.5 ㎞,而对照组研究对象在20分钟内仅能跑完5㎞。尽管在同一时间内,试验组多跑了1.5㎞,但是该组研究对象的体力消耗程度仍较对照组较低。

在英国约有1千万人的维生素D水平较低,平均而言,在夏季有十分之一的成人的维生素D水平较低,而在冬季则有五分之二的成人的维生素D的水平较低。由于肤色深的人使用日照产生维生素D的效率较低,所以在冬季每四个肤色较深的成人中便有三个维生素缺乏。

此次初步研究表明,维生素D补充剂可提高机体的运动性能并较低心血管疾病发生的危险因素,如血压。研究人员表示,下一步他们将进行样本量更大、时间更久的临床试验,研究对象不仅会纳入健康人还会纳入运动员,如自行车运动员和长跑运动员。

维生素D缺乏症是与胰岛素抵抗,糖尿病,类风湿性关节炎和某些癌症发生风险相关的一种潜在的症状,该研究进一步表明解决这个问题的重要性。
