Guideline on management of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy
2010-03-01
For induction of treatment in patients with troublesome symptoms, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or corticosteroids should be used. In pure motor CIDP, IVIG should be considered first choice.Plasma exchange should be considered if IVIG or corticosteroids are ineffective. For long-term management, if the first-line treatment is effective, it should be continued until maximum benefit is achieved and then tapered to the lowest effective maintenance dose. If ineffective, or if maintenance dose is high, combination treatment or addition of an immunosuppressant should be considered.Pain should be treated with an appropriate medicine.Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological therapy, rehabilitation therapy, and orthoses may be required.Information on foot care, exercise, diet, driving, lifestyle management, and support groups should be given.
