亚特兰大埃默里大学Winship癌症研究所的Richard J. Cassidy博士及其同事研究了治疗对2，723例II / III期直肠腺癌患者的总体生存率的影响，并用国家癌症数据确定了治疗预测因子数据库。

总体而言，未接受治疗、单独手术治疗、短期放射治疗（RT + S）、放化疗和手术（CRT + S）、术后放化疗（S + CRT）的人群比例分别是14.9，29.7，5.0，45.3和5.1％。研究人员观察到，没有接受治疗与非洲裔美国人和居住地的教育程度较低具有相关性。与男性性别，年龄较大，合并症恶化相关，并且没有接受治疗或单独接受手术，整体生存情况更糟。在RT + S，S + CRT和CRT + S之间的总生存期间没有观察到统计学差异。CRT + S改善了相互作用测试的总生存期，独立于年龄，并发症状态，性别，种族和肿瘤阶段。与单纯手术相比，CRT + S在倾向得分匹配分析中与改善总体生存率相关。
