在小鼠模型中,脂肪酸代谢的下降在纤维化迹象之前就发生。在人肾小管上皮细胞中,人为降低脂肪酸代谢会迅速带来纤维化样症状,包括脂肪分子的堆积和许多受影响细胞的死亡。肾细胞脂肪堆积已被推测在CKD纤维化中会显著引起细胞死亡。但Susztak用肾小管上皮细胞脂肪堆积的小鼠模型显示脂肪堆积对于肾小管上皮细胞自身有最小影响,而当脂肪酸代谢下降时,纤维化的更重要因素是细胞中能量的损失。

研究人员还发现证据表明肾小管上皮细胞脂肪酸代谢的关闭在很大程度上是由生长因子TGFβ引起的。TGFβ是已知可以促进纤维化,已与高血糖水平,高血压和炎症相关,高血糖水平,高血压和炎症都为CKD的触发因素。
