2021科学突破奖名单揭晓,四位科学家斩获“生命科学奖”

当地时间9月10日,科学突破奖基金会宣布了2021年突破奖获奖者,共有15位科学家上榜。其中,生命科学突破奖由华盛顿大学和霍华德·休斯医学研究所(以下简称:HHMI)的David Baker、哈佛大学和HHMI的Catherine Dulac、香港中文大学的卢煜明以及美国国立卫生研究院的Richard J. Youle斩获。

创立于2012年的“科学突破”奖素有“科学界奥斯卡”之称,旨在表彰全球顶尖物理、数学和生命科学家的研究成果。该奖项由俄罗斯亿万富翁Yuri Milner与Julia Milner夫妇、谷歌联合创始人Sergey Brin、脸书联合创始人Mark Zuckerberg及Priscilla Chan夫妇、基因技术公司23andMe联合创始人Anne Wojcicki等共同创立和资助,中国腾讯公司董事会主席马化腾也是该奖的创始捐赠人。

本届科学突破奖总计颁发了1875万美元的奖金,迄今为止已授予近3000名领先科学家超过2.5亿美元。该奖项旨在帮助科学领导者摆脱财务束缚,集中精力充分开拓思维,提高基础科学和数学的知名度和声望,激发一种求知求智的文化并激励下一代研究人员向这些非凡的科学榜样学习。

华盛顿大学/HHMI

David Baker

获奖理由:用于开发能够设计自然界中从未见过的蛋白质的技术,包括可能对人类疾病进行治疗性干预的新型蛋白质。

1983年,当贝克在哈佛大学学习哲学时,他在一堂生物学课上接触到了所谓的“蛋白质折叠问题”,由此对蛋白质折叠和其他未解的生物学之谜产生了浓厚的兴趣,并转专业申请了研究生院。

大约二十年前,Baker及其团队创建了一种称为Rosetta的计算机算法,通过搜索天然的蛋白质的最低能量状态来预测其结构。自此,Baker开始利用Rosetta的力量来创造新的蛋白质结构和功能。

在过去的几年中,Baker团队已经证明了具有新一代自然界中未发现的序列和结构的功能蛋白的潜力。此类合成蛋白可以通过推进基于蛋白质的疗法,为下一代医学提供信息,甚至帮助分解环境中的有毒分子,应对当前的健康挑战。

哈佛大学/HHMI

Catherine Dulac

获奖理由:用于将父母教养的复杂行为分解为细胞类型及其连接的水平,并证明在男女中都存在控制男性和女性特定的父母教养行为的神经回路。

Dulac开发了一种基于cDNA筛选的新颖筛选策略单神经元文库和从单神经元克隆基因的新方法。她的实验室使用尖端的分子和遗传工具来研究大脑如何控制社会行为。

实验室目前正在进行两大研究领域:研究分子、细胞和系统层面的几个项目,以研究构成社会行为基础的神经元回路的结构和功能逻辑;探讨基因组在大脑中的印迹现象,以及这种表观遗传修饰模式在大脑发育和成年大脑功能中的作用。

香港中文大学

卢煜明

获奖理由:发现了母体血液中存在胎儿DNA,可用于唐氏综合征和其他遗传疾病的产前检查。

1997年,卢煜明发现在孕妇外周血中存在游离的胎儿DNA,并发展出了一套新技术来准确分析和度量母亲血浆内的胎儿DNA,被誉为无创DNA产前检测的奠基人。他和他的团队后来研发了唐氏综合症的无创检验方法,该方法迅速被超过90个国家所采用。

此外,卢煜明的团队通过大型平行测序技术及创新的生物信息科技,分析母体血浆中的微量DNA,成功破解了胎儿的全基因组图谱,可及早预测多种遗传病,这技术也可以应用到多种癌症的检测。

美国国立卫生研究院

Richard J. Youle

获奖理由:阐明清除受损线粒体从而预防帕金森氏病的质量控制途径。

1985年,Richard加入了NINDS的外科神经病学分部,担任首席研究员,在那里开发并开展了针对脑肿瘤的新治疗策略的临床试验。他的实验室随后探索了程序性细胞死亡的分子机制,显示了Bcl-2家族成员如何与线粒体一起参与控制细胞存活。

最近,他所在的实验室发现了家族性帕金森氏病中突变的蛋白质之间的功能和相互关系,目前其工作集中于自噬的分子机制。
