在大部分评估的年龄时间段内,体育锻炼越多,抑郁症状越少。例如在50岁时每周体育锻炼的次数增加一次,则平均抑郁症状的数量就减少0.06。纵向分析观察到抑郁症状与体育锻炼之间的相关性随着年龄增加而减弱。23岁无抑郁症状的受试者在5年后其平均体育锻炼的频率增加了0.6次/周;在那些有一项抑郁症状的受试者中,增加0.53次/周。

因此,该研究结论认为,体育锻炼和抑郁症状之间的相关性是双向性的,体育锻炼可能减轻普通人群的抑郁症状。相反,成人早期的抑郁症状可能是进行体育锻炼的一个障碍因素。
