嗜中性粒细胞是人体内最丰富的免疫细胞,也是保护人体免受细菌、真菌和寄生虫感染的重要免疫细胞。没有它们,人类对病原体就没有防御能力。这项为期五年的奖项将允许Amulic博士领导一个研究小组,研究中性粒细胞反应如何受调控,如何直接吞噬寄生虫,以及如何将细菌包埋在嗜中性粒细胞胞外陷阱(NETs)杀灭细菌。NETs是中性粒细胞死后产生的特殊的DNA胞外网络,可在细胞死后实现持续杀菌的作用。

Amulic博士表示:"抗微生物药物耐药性的出现威胁着人类的健康,而抗击感染的策略之一就是提高嗜中性粒细胞杀死病原体的天然能力。我希望这个奖项能让我们发现调节嗜中性粒细胞功能的基因和生化途径。我也非常渴望了解嗜中性粒细胞如何调控炎症疾病,过度的嗜中性粒细胞活化会损伤组织并导致疾病,如自身免疫疾病和癌症。更好地理解嗜中性粒细胞,将帮助我们克服过度中性粒细胞激活带来的危害。
