人类无法体会“现在”大脑总处理过时信息

据西班牙《趣味》月刊8月号文章称,无论怎样,如果人们想对“现在”有所了解就必须搞清人们是如何体会时间的流逝。尽管人们并不拥有一个针对时间的特定的感官系统,但人们已经建立了一些能够帮助自己为时间做“注解”的生理结构,如大脑皮层、小脑和基底节等。此外,位于下丘脑中心的视交叉上核控制着人类的昼夜节律,调节着人类的生物钟。

该领域著名专家、美国杜克大学心理学家沃伦·梅克认为,人们感知时间的能力来源于大脑皮层上层的细胞振荡活动,而基底神经节的纹状体会探测到这种振荡的频率。

人们将具体时间变成没有间隔的胶片

文章称,梅克在其建立的生理模型中区分出了显性时间和隐性时间。前者测量的是一个刺激的持续时间,后者测量的是两个刺激之间的间隔。隐性时间是大脑为“现在”下定义的方式。干预这两种时间测量方式的是大脑的不同区域。隐性时间会出现在例如进行运动的时候,涉及大脑顶叶皮层以及左侧小脑和运动前区;而显性时间通常涉及到的是右前额皮层和辅助运动区。

不过时间的隐性定义存在两个显然不相容的方面:一方面,人们以永恒的方式存在于“现在”;另一方面,时间又在一刻不停地从过去向未来流逝。那么,人们是如何使一系列的“现在”变成湍流不息的时间长河的呢?德国弗里堡心理学与心理健康研究所专家马克·维特曼认为,在这些瞬间中存在一个等级,每个瞬间都是打造下一个等级的砖块的一部分。维特曼指出,一切都开始于大脑对外界刺激做出反应的那个时刻,这个瞬间通常持续最多10毫秒。随后,所有这些时刻组合在一起形成了有意识的“现在”,这一过程需要大脑花费大概3秒的时间。最后,人们的大脑会构建出时间流逝的画面,这需要长达半分钟的时间。

大脑运转就像一杯刺激的鸡尾酒

瑜伽的一个定律引起了维特曼的注意,这条定律说,打坐冥想能让人们与当下更近距离接触。这种说法驱使维特曼设计出了一项试验。他请来有冥想习惯和从来没有这一习惯的人各38名,要求他们观察一个“内克尔立方体”,即因光学错觉可以对其透视关系有不同解读的透明立方体。志愿者们必须在认为看到眼前的立方体出现变化时按下一个按钮。通过这种方式可以估算出心理上的“现在”的持续时间。结果表明,这一时间大约是4秒。看上去冥想似乎并不更有利于与“现在”的亲近。不过维特曼也观察到,那些有冥想习惯的人有能力在8秒内以同样的视角观察“内克尔立方体”,因此可以肯定的是,冥想能够帮助集中注意力。

文章称,根据美国得克萨斯州神经科学专家戴维·伊格尔曼的观点,为了理解“现在”是如何构建的,人们必须认识到大脑是以不同速度在处理各感官提供的信息。举例来说,人们的听觉系统能够在1毫秒中区分出两种不同的声音,但视觉系统却在10毫秒之内无法感知两个不同图像之间的区别。当人们试图确定两件事是否同时发生时,情况则会变得更为复杂。如果两件事的间隔不到5毫秒,大脑会认为它们是同时发生,如要探测到它们的顺序,大概需要长达50毫秒的时间。

人类无法阻止自己迈向未来

这就意味着大脑必须将这些差别结合起来,构建出一张周遭环境的统一画面。“视觉大脑区分不同事件需要花费至少1/10的时间。”伊格尔曼指出。如果人类面前同时出现以不同速度运行的光和声音的画面,那么任务会更加繁重,因为感官无法同时捕捉到光和声音,例如在观赏烟花时。那么人类的大脑究竟是如何掌控这一切的呢?

神经学家认为,为了完成这个任务,大脑会不停地对即将发生的情况进行预测。这种特性被用在早期的电视研发领域,工程师们在试图协调视频和音频信号时发现,电视观众们的大脑会自动对100毫秒内看到的图像的视频和音频进行同步处理。

文章称,法国科学家维尔日妮·范瓦森霍芬领导的一个研究团队针对这一现象设计了一项试验,将一些志愿者置于一个每次出现1秒钟闪光和蜂鸣声的环境中,但两者间有200毫秒的间隔。与此同时,专家们通过扫描设备对志愿者的大脑活动进行监测和记录。研究发现,志愿者们的大脑中会产生两种脑电波,分别出现在视觉和听觉皮层,频率也是每次1秒。

人类处理的都是过时信息

文章称,当志愿者的大脑开始同时接收闪光和蜂鸣这两种刺激时,两种脑电波也在相互调整配合。范瓦森霍芬认为,这意味着大脑中存在着一个知道如何处理时间的活跃的机制。他的研究认为,无意识大脑是决定“现在”的关键。2014年,意大利特伦托大学专家戴维·梅尔克研究称“现在”的持续时间是2至3秒。在研究中,他准备了一部电影,然后将一些场景进行剪切,被剪切完成的片段有的持续几毫秒,有的持续数秒。随后,梅尔克将这些片段随机组合在一起,然后重置了这部电影。研究表明,如果剪切片段不超过2.5秒,参加这项试验的志愿者们在观看影片时不会发现任何异样,如果超过这个时间,他们就会感到不对劲。

梅尔克称,这种情况与人们在看一篇有一些字母被抹去或调换位置的信件时类似,尽管并不是正确的字母,但为了能够读懂这篇文章,人们的大脑还是会自动填满那些空缺。他表示,人类为了体察到“现在”而打开的这扇持续近3秒的“窗户”是大脑中的一个机制的结果,而这个机制解开了一个惊人的谜团:大脑总是在处理过时的信息。这扇窗不能太大。因为头脑处理与“现在”这一刻尽可能接近的信息是一种显而易见的进化优势。如果人们生活在太“过去”的时刻,就将面临无法进入“现在”的风险。正因如此,根据伊格尔曼的观点,大脑允许人类的感知系统延迟最多不超过1/10秒,从而能够在随后建立起“现在”,但这个“现在”实际上已经过去了近2秒的时间。“我们对世界的感知是建立在过去的基础上。”伊格尔曼表示。

情绪会改变人类对时间的感知

在人类的大脑中还有一些构造能够利用光明与黑暗的周期来调节人体的某些生物节律,但并不清楚这些构造是如何记录分秒流逝的。事实上,有一些情况会改变人类对时间的感知。一项针对一些心理学专业学生进行的研究表明,这些学生在看完一些恐怖电影片段后会对一个特定的时间间隔做出高估的判断。法国社会心理学专家茜尔维·德鲁瓦-沃莱指出,这种情况的发生主要因为恐惧会刺激大脑杏仁核,拨快生物钟。德鲁瓦-沃莱表示,这是一种古老的防御机制,使人类能够在直面威胁前就做出决定,从而逃离危险的境地。

文章称,此外,人类对时间的感知会随着年龄的增长而加快。英国和爱尔兰科学家在一项研究中要求一组19至24岁的年轻人和另一组60至80岁的老年人分别对3分钟的时间进行预估。结果表明,年轻人的平均误差在3秒左右,而老年人的误差高达40秒。这一结果的具体原因仍是个谜。爱因斯坦似乎早已察觉到大脑中发生的一切,并在相对论中说到“过去、现在和未来之间的区别是一场顽固持久的幻觉”。
