在斯坦福大学（Powell-Riley）第一阶段协议的背景下，颏舌肌前移（GMA）在1993年被报道为阻塞性睡眠呼吸暂停综合征（OSAS）手术治疗的一种选择。该技术的基本原理是在把张力放置舌根部，从而防止舌头落入后气道空间。然而，对于正在进行斯坦福大学协议第一阶段的下颌退缩患者，额外的成形术将会提供更好的美学效果。此外，颏成形术是用于矫正牙齿畸形的最常用和最通用的技术之一。
